Now that Inverness has achieved city status, Fort William is the largest town in the Highland region of Scotland.
After years of natural slow growth Fort William is a town on the move. Many national retailers are setting up shop in new out of town retail parks and a new town center development.
Over a thousand new houses in 4 or 5 central or nearby locations are being considered by the planning office.
The massive Water Front development will go ahead one day, when everybody can agree on what it should consist of.
The town follows the steep banks of Loch Lhinne as it turns and and joins Loch Eil (both salt water lochs).
Industry
The town has a large tourism industry. Other main employers include:-
- Fish Farming
- Fish Processing
- Large Sawmill
- Forestry
- Ski Centre
- Aluminum Smelter Factory
- Retail
There are numerous other smaller employers including a boat yard, the Underwater Centre (Commercial Diving School) and call center.
The Pulp and Paper Mill was closed in 2005 and the whole plant was flattened in 2008-9 ready for the relocation of the expanding Saw Mill.
With it's many outdoor activities Fort William and the wider Lochaber region have acquired the title "Outdoor Capital of the UK"
